National History

Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority was founded on November 4, 1899, at Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, Michigan by eight women. The founders of Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority are Helene M. Rice, Mayene Tracy, Adraiance Rice, Eva O’Keefe, May Gephart, Mabel Chase, Ruth Dutcher, and Harriet Marx. The colors of AST are emerald green and gold. The flower is the yellow rose and the jewel is the white pearl. The purpose of AST has been to promote the ethical, cultural, and social development of its members.

Today, collegiate and alumnae sisters continue to form strong and lasting bonds in Alpha Sigma Tau. Our national Philanthropy is Pine Mountain Settlement School. In June 2002 Alpha Sigma Tau selected Habitat for Humanity as our National Service Project to expand the mission in contributing to progress of mankind. We welcome new sisters and help each other be contributing members of our community.
